Village Hall
We were appointed by the committee to deliver a Building Regulations package for a new oak-framed village hall, replacing an ageing Nissen hut on the site.
We were commissioned by the RSPB following a competitive design process to deliver a new office and staff accommodation building within a sensitive woodland setting. Our proposal focused on a low-impact, cost-efficient solution, using a Canadian-style log construction to harmonise with the surrounding landscape.
The building is arranged to provide office space and a meeting/conference room at first floor level, with dedicated volunteer accommodation occupying the remaining areas. Supporting infrastructure includes a separate biomass boiler building, complemented by roof-mounted solar PV to reduce operational energy demand.
The design approach was to create a building that is as close to off-grid as possible, minimising environmental impact while providing functional, robust and comfortable spaces for staff and volunteers.
Following the success of this project, we were subsequently commissioned on a number of local forest school schemes, continuing the use of log construction in similarly sensitive natural environments.
